21% INCREASE IN LITTLE VENICE SPORTS CENTRE CONSTRUCTION COSTS

Posted: 05/05/09

The cost of the new Little Venice Sports Centre in Crompton Street has increased by nearly £1 million as a result of series of blunders and delays by Westminster City Council which have increased costs by 21% from £4,422,000 to £5,351,000, an increase of over £929,000. The construction of the new sports centre should have been completed by February 2009 but been delayed by over four months and will now not be finished until June 2009.

A Council Briefing Note on the project reveals that "information was not submitted on time", "design work was not submitted on time to the contractor"
and "It wasn't until early December that the full scale of the project delay became apparent"

At a time of economic difficulties when residents are fearful for their future and 400 council staff are losing their jobs, Westminster Conservatives have no right to lose another £1 million.  Heads should roll for this latest example of Westminster City Council failure and incompetence, as they should have done as a result of the Icelandic banks fiasco.
